The Sisters of St. Joseph were founded in France in 1650 and first arrived in the Diocese of Erie, Pennsylvania in 1860. Our story is filled with examples of ministries and initiatives that are in response to the needs of the day, and they are still evolving.
"That all may be one, as you, Father are in me and I in you I pray that they may be one in us." John 17:21
Our Mission
We are women who affirm our mission of unity
of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God.
Our mission is rooted in the mission of Jesus Christ
the same mission which continually unfolds in the Church.
That all may be one, as you, Father are in me and I in you I pray that they may be one in us.
John 17:21
Through a profound and radical response to the Spirit
we fulfill this mission by searching out and undertaking
whatever ministry may best bring about this unity.
Moved by the love of the Spirit, we commit ourselves to constant response
to the ever-changing needs of the world.

Simply said, our mission is to unite all people with one another and God by responding to the world's ever-changing needs and serving the neighbor without distinction.
Our ministries change with the times and are different today than in the late 1800s when we first arrived in the Erie Diocese. What never changes is our spirituality and desire to be Sisters of the neighborhood, working to build relationships and create unity.
Find and Contact A Sister
Are you looking to connect or re-connect with one of our Sisters? You can search here for a Sister by her last name or by her first name. Did you know that after Vatican II, many Sisters returned to using their birth names rather than the religious names they were given when they entered? We’ve included current and former religious names to make your search easier. Just search by the name you remember.
Once you find a Sister, click the Get in Touch link to send a message (please note: messages sent to Sisters via the website may not be private — please do not include personal or confidential information until you have established contact .) If she is deceased, but you want to make an inquiry, send an email to publicrelations@ssjerie.org.
