We Joyfully Welcome Pope Leo
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania joyfully welcome the news of our new Pope, Leo XIV, as the leader of the Catholic Church. We are excited that he is an American, and we find great hope in the movement of the Holy Spirit that guided the conclave to this historic decision.
Like Pope Francis, who emerged from a religious order, we believe that Pope Leo’s experience in the Augustinian order enables him to recognize the value of unity and community. “Unitas, Caritas, Veritas” (unity, love, and truth) — are the three values central to the Augustinian tradition. With the guidance of these values and his diverse and extensive background, Pope Leo is uniquely qualified to effectively serve the Church and shepherd God’s people. He has firsthand experience of ministering among the people in the global north and south, and he has leadership and organizational experience gained from serving as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine. He speaks of Pope Francis with respect and appreciation, reminding us to be welcoming and respectful of others and to build bridges.
Our new pope is a positive and hopeful sign for our Church and our world, including his choice of the name Leo. Pope Leo XIII (elected 1878) is remembered for his commitment to social policies and social justice, including workers’ rights.
God’s movement through the Holy Spirit often surprises us and yet transforms us. It is always exactly what is needed. We are grateful, and we invite all to join us in prayer and thanksgiving for Pope Leo XIV.
