Ann Marie Joint, SSJ
SisterBiography
Former Religious Name: Sister John Patrick
Home Parish: St. Ann, Erie, PA
Sister Ann Marie Joint, SSJ, formerly Sr. John Patrick, first considered religious life in seventh and eighth grade, although she initially tried to ignore the possibility. The thought returned during her junior and senior years of high school. During that time, she was particularly impressed by the joy she saw in her teachers.
Sister Ann Marie has dedicated her life to Catholic education, helping generations of students grow in knowledge and faith. Born on August 1, 1941, in Erie, Pennsylvania, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Ann Church in Erie on August 27, 1959, and professed her final vows on August 15, 1967. Throughout her years in religious life, she has been guided by a deep understanding of God’s unconditional love and a commitment to sharing that love with others.
Sister Ann Marie attended St. Ann School and graduated from Villa Maria Academy in Erie in 1959. She continued her education at Villa Maria College, earning her degree in 1969, and later pursued further studies at Edinboro University, where she completed additional education in 1985. Her educational background prepared her for a long and meaningful career in Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Erie.
Beginning in 1959, Sister Ann Marie taught at several schools, including Blessed Sacrament School, Our Lady’s Christian School, Sacred Heart School, St. Patrick School, Villa Maria Academy, and Villa Maria Elementary. She served at Sacred Heart School for many years, from 1978 to 1993, before continuing her ministry at Villa Maria Academy. She finished her teaching career at Villa Maria Elementary, sharing her experience and dedication with the school community.
Sister Ann Marie draws inspiration from the belief that God is beyond measure and loves every person unconditionally. She expresses this understanding simply: “God is a circumference without a diameter. God is an unconditional lover of all persons.” This image reflects her sense of God’s limitless presence and love, which have sustained her throughout her vocation.
Her mother was an important influence in her life, demonstrating a love for life and a dedication to serving her neighbor. Sister Ann Marie also remembers Monsignor Nash, whom she met while attending Villa Maria Academy. She was drawn to the twinkle in his eye and his spirituality, and she maintained contact with him throughout her religious life. His influence remained meaningful to her, and she continues to miss him.
Through decades of teaching, Sister Ann Marie has had the opportunity to share her faith and encourage students in their own growth. Her vocation reflects the influences she valued most: the unconditional love of God, the example of those who serve others, and the joy found in a life devoted to faith and education. Her continued ministry at Villa Maria Elementary stands as a testament to her enduring commitment to Catholic education and to the students and communities she has served.
