Carol Morehouse, SSJ
SisterBiography
Home Parish: St. Peter Cathedral, Erie, PA
Sister Carol Morehouse, SSJ, is a native of Erie, Pennsylvania, and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Peter Cathedral Parish in Erie in 1974. Her vocation has been marked by a deep commitment to education, ministry, service, and leadership, allowing her to serve the Church and community in a variety of ways throughout her life as a Sister of St. Joseph.
Sister Carol graduated from Villa Maria Academy and continued her education at Villa Maria College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1971. She later felt called to further her education in another field of service and earned a Juris Doctor degree in Law from Duquesne University Law School in 1986. Her background in both education and law would provide her with unique opportunities to serve the Sisters, the Church, and the wider community.
After entering the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1974, Sister Carol professed her final vows in 1981. In the early years of her ministry, she served as a teacher in several Erie Diocesan elementary schools. Her love of education eventually led her to serve as principal and administrator at Villa Maria Academy, where she continued the tradition of providing young people with an education rooted in faith and a commitment to service.
Sister Carol later expanded her ministry through the practice of law. She served as an attorney in private practice and was affiliated with the Moran, Morehouse, and Bruno firm. Her legal education and experience became another way for her to use her gifts in service of others and in support of the ministries and mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Her ministry also brought her to Saint Vincent Health Center, where she served in leadership positions focused on mission and pastoral care. She served as Senior Vice President of Mission Integration and later as Pastoral Care and Mission Integration Director. In these roles, Sister Carol helped ensure that the mission and values of Catholic healthcare remained at the heart of the organization’s work, while also providing pastoral care and support to those entrusted to its ministry.
Leadership within the Sisters of St. Joseph has been another significant part of Sister Carol’s ministry. She previously served as a councilor and treasurer and as a leadership delegate-at-large. She is currently serving a second term in Leadership for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania, continuing to share her experience, wisdom, and dedication in service to the congregation and its mission.
Sister Carol’s commitment to service extends beyond the Sisters of St. Joseph. She serves on the boards of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Sisters of St. Joseph Mission & Ministries Foundation, Harborcreek Youth Services, St. Patrick’s Haven, and St. James Haven. She has also previously served on the boards of Saint Vincent Health Center, Villa Maria Academy, and the SSJ Neighborhood Network. During the final year of Villa Maria Elementary School, Sister Carol served as president of the school’s board, helping guide the school through an important period in its history.
Throughout her many ministries, Sister Carol has found different ways to live out the call she first answered when she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph. Whether through teaching and administration, the practice of law, pastoral care and mission integration, or congregational and community leadership, she has used her gifts in service to others.
Her years of ministry reflect the many ways a vocation to religious life can unfold. Through education, professional service, pastoral ministry, and leadership, Sister Carol has continued to contribute to the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph and to the people and communities she has been called to serve.
