Sister Martha Howick, SSJ, born in Meadville, PA, entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Agatha Parish in Meadville, PA in 1959. She professed perpetual vows on August 15, 1967.
She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph after attending Indiana State Teachers’ College and completing training at Erie Commercial College, Ariel Bldg. She earned a bachelor’s in elementary education at Villa Maria College and furthered her education at Gannon, completing the gerontology and pastoral ministry associate program.
Throughout her life, Sister Martha served as an elementary teacher in many Erie Diocesan Catholic schools, including Our Lady of Peace, St. Ann, St. Andrew, Cathedral Grade School, and Villa Maria College, as Assistant Director of Financial Aid and Director of Institutional Research. She served as a visitation and pastoral minister at several parishes, including St. Stephen, St. Paul, Sacred Heart, St. Jude, St. Peter Cathedral, and Holy Rosary parishes. She has also served as a chaplain at Saint Vincent Hospital.
