Biography

Home parish: Our Lady of Fatima, Farrell, PA

Sister Mary Ann White, SSJ, felt an immediate sense of comfort when she came to the Sisters of St. Joseph, even though she initially could not explain why. As she studied the history of the Congregation and its foundational documents, she came to recognize that what had drawn her to the Sisters was their charism of unity—the unity of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. She saw this charism reflected in the Sisters she encountered, whose gentleness and peace embodied the kind of life she desired to live.

Sister Mary Ann began her professional career as an elementary educator and basketball coach for the Farrell Area School District, serving from 1970 to 1977. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on August 1, 1977, and professed her final vows on September 11, 1983. Following her entry into religious life, she continued her commitment to education, teaching at St. Patrick School in Erie from 1977 to 1978 and again from 1979 to 1980, and at Villa Maria Elementary from 1980 to 1982. She later taught at Our Lady’s Christian School in Erie from 1983 to 1985.

Throughout her ministry, Sister Mary Ann has served in a variety of educational, pastoral, and faith-formation roles. From 1986 to 1988, she served as Campus Minister at Villa Maria Academy in Erie. She then ministered as Campus Minister at Gannondale Residential Center in Erie from 1988 to 1997. Her dedication to religious education continued at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Edinboro, where she served as Director of Religious Education from 1997 to 2000.

In 2000, Sister Mary Ann began serving as Parish Minister at St. Stanislaus Parish in Erie, where her ministry has centered on accompanying the parish community in its faith and spiritual life. Her varied experiences in education, campus ministry, and parish service reflect a longstanding commitment to helping others grow in faith and strengthening relationships within the communities she serves.

The charism of unity remains central to Sister Mary Ann’s vocation. Through her ministry and her relationships with others, she seeks to embody the gentleness and peace that first attracted her to the Sisters of St. Joseph. Her life of service reflects the Congregation’s mission of fostering unity among neighbors and deepening the connection between people and God.
