Sisters of St. Joseph Express Profound Sorrow and Solidarity Following Tragic Erie Shooting

The Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania join the Erie community in mourning the devastating loss of life resulting from the mass shooting on Friday, October 9, 2026.

The tragedy, which claimed the lives of eight victims and the shooter, including young children and a pregnant woman, has left our community grieving and searching for comfort in the face of unimaginable loss.

As women of faith committed to unity, peace, and service to the dear neighbor, we are heartbroken by this senseless act of violence. Our deepest sympathies and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, as well as the neighbors, first responders, and all who have been affected by this tragedy.

“When violence strikes our community, it touches all of us. We grieve not only for the lives lost but also for the families, friends, and neighbors whose lives have been forever changed. In this time of profound sorrow, we stand together in compassion, prayer, and solidarity. May those who mourn find comfort in knowing they are not alone, and may our shared grief strengthen our commitment to building a community rooted in love, understanding, and peace.”

The Sisters of St. Joseph believe deeply in the sacredness of every human life and the responsibility we share to care for one another. This heartbreaking event reminds us of the urgent need to address the violence that continues to affect families and communities across our nation and our world.

While we recognize that words alone cannot heal the pain of such tremendous loss, we believe that compassion, connection, and a commitment to nonviolence can help guide our community toward healing.

In the days ahead, may we honor the lives lost not only through our prayers but also through our continued efforts to create a community where every person is valued, every life is respected, peace is actively pursued, and nonviolence is possible.
Together, may we be instruments of healing, hope, and peace.
