A Lenten reflection by SSJ Agrégée Tammy Van Buren
The story goes that an experienced climber had almost reached the top of the mountain when he lost his footing and plunged backward toward the ground.
“God! Help me!” the man cried out in desperation.
As quickly as he had been falling, he came to a sudden but gentle stop. God spoke to him. “You called out for Me?”
“God?” the man asked with hesitation.
“Yes,” God answered in a loving voice.
“Thank you for saving me. I thought I was a goner for sure. If you could lower me the rest of the way down to the ground, please, this adventure can be over.”
“You’re welcome, God answered. Do you believe in Me and trust Me?”
“Absolutely! I have followed your teachings all my life and have obeyed your word. You know me, God.”
“Let go of the rope.”
“What! Are you nuts? I’ve fallen halfway down a mountain. I am not letting go until I feel the ground under me.”
“You said that you trust and believe in Me. Let go of the rope.”
The man straightened up, gripped the rope as tightly as possible, and hung on for dear life. The next morning, rescuers found the climber frozen to death, clinging to the rope, one foot off the ground.
I am that climber. Perhaps you are, too.
I have had experiences in the last month or two where I found myself hanging on to the rope, knowing that I had all the answers, but did not feel God was working with me.
God was and still is working with me. I am finally working with God. I let go of the rope and found my feet on the ground. Let go of the rope. The ground is right there.
