An Erie native, Sister Margaret Ann Hardner attended St. Patrick School, Villa Maria Academy, and Villa Maria College, all in Erie, before attending Xavier University and Providence College. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Patrick’s parish on September 2, 1949, and she professed her final vows on August 15, 1955. Sister Margaret Ann was a long-time teacher who taught at schools throughout the Erie Diocese, including Blessed Sacrament, St. John, Villa Maria Academy in Erie, and St. Francis in Clearfield, PA. Following her teaching career, she served at Saint Hospital (later Saint Vincent Health Center) for 34 years, including 22 years as CEO. Sister Margaret Ann was instrumental in establishing the Courage to Come Back program in Erie, which later became the SSJ Spirit of Courage, a ministry of the Sisters of
St. Joseph. For 18 years, the SSJ Spirit of Courage event honored individuals in our community who overcame tremendous adversities by sharing their stories, recognizing their courage, and inspiring others. In 2007, Saint Vincent Health Center dedicated its new medical office building and named it the Hardner Building in honor of Sr. Margaret Ann. She was involved with the Shankar Service Foundation, established by local physician Dr. Kripa Singh. Sr. Margaret Ann made many mission trips to India to assist with St. Joseph School and a hospital, both established by Shankar.
